Discovery Bible Study: Exploring God's Word | Grace Church Thame
Discovery Bible Study

Discovery Bible Study

A simple way to engage with God's Word.

The Discovery Method

We believe you are fully equipped to explore the Bible for yourself. Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is a simple, reproducible method that helps you find your own answers in the text—either on your own or with a circle of friends.

Start on Your Own

Spend time daily engaging directly with the text. No pre-written sermons or lectures—just you and the Word, asking simple questions to see what God is saying to you today.

Grow with Others

While the method works perfectly alone, we find it comes alive when you gather with people you trust. Sharing your discoveries helps everyone see fresh perspectives.

The 4-Step Discovery Rhythm

Follow this simple rhythm to explore any Bible passage. No "expert" required.

1. Read Slowly Read the passage aloud twice. If you are with others, have two different people read it. What stood out to you?
2. Reflect Deeply Ask: What does this teach me about God? What does it teach me about people?
3. Practice Faithfully The Bible is for doing, not just knowing. Ask: "If this is true, what is my 'I will' action for today?"
4. Chat Honestly If you are in a group, share what you've noticed. How can you support each other in your "I will" steps this week?

Better Together: While personal study is vital, the best discoveries often happen when you chat about them with others. Why not invite a few people to read the first story with you this week?

Not Sure What’s Next?

Whether you are using this method alone for the first time or you are thinking about inviting a few others to join you, you don't have to figure it out alone.

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right."

— 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)
